Ash Wednesday, Valentine’s Day and Shrove Tuesday
You may have noticed on the calendar that Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14 this year. This coincidence has not happened for decades.
Ash Wednesday, as the first day of Lent, always take precedence over any other memorial for that day. Ash Wednesday is a universal day of fasting and abstinence from meat – which applies to Catholics from the age of 16-59. This would mean that children in elementary schools are not bound by the law of fasting even though we often encourage them to eat more modestly and to abstain from treats on such days.
As in years past our School Council has organized volunteers who will be making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 13th for students. Consequently, we will be holding our Valentine’s celebrations on February 13th instead, in anticipation of the feast day of St. Valentine.
